SHIPS SPRING (MARCH/APRIL) - Grown from seed, this is a 2 year old shrub that is 10-20 inches tall (roots additional), coming to you BARE ROOT. It has a well developed root system, is starting to bud, and is ready for transplant! The shrubs shown in the last 5 pictures are representative samples of what you will receive - each plant is unique and will vary in size and shape. (From time to time we also have small quantities of "baby" plants available; if in stock they will be selectable in the drop-down box.)

In spring beautiful showy white blooms cover the dark branches. Beach plums are excellent for jelly, jam, fruit leather, fresh eating! As with all wild foods, there is some variability from fruit to fruit in terms of sweetness, tartness, bitterness. Beach plums are about 1/2 inch - 1 inch in diameter, ranging in color from yellow to deep purple.

Although typically found growing naturally in poor sandy soils, the plants thrive in well-drained fertile soils with a pH of 6-6.5. Additional fertilization will increase productivity. An annual 5-gallon bucket or two of compost per plant is recommended. Prune to maintain an open center for good light penetration.

Plant about 5' apart. Pollination requirements are uncertain - we recommend planting at least two for good fruiting. Salt tolerant! Native to eastern U.S.; hardy down to Zone 3.

Here is a fun article from the 1981 New York Times about beach plums: https://www.nytimes.com/1981/09/06/nyregion/food-beach-plums-ready-to-pick-and-cook.html
